It’s time to face abortion.

1st Trimester Surgical.
SHORT EXPLANATION: The baby is suctioned out of the uterus with a suction machine 10 to 14 times more powerful than a household vacuum cleaner. Typically used between 5-13 weeks of pregnancy.
COST: $1000-3000 CAD. Covered by universal medical coverage if the mother is a permanent resident of Canada.
SIDE EFFECTS: Bleeding, cramping, trauma.
LONG-TERM RISKS: Incomplete abortion (pieces of the baby left behind) can lead to infection or bleeding, perforated (punctured) uterus, damage to the intestine, bladder and nearby blood vessels, hemorrhage, infection, maternal death, future pregnancy complications due to damage to the cervix, and trauma.
1st Trimester Medical.
SHORT EXPLANATION: The mother ingests pills to starve and expel the embryo. Typically taken between 5-10 weeks of pregnancy. Only FDA approved for up to 5 weeks.
COST: $300-450 CAD per package. Covered province by province. NB, AB, ON, QC, and NS all cover it. BC, SK, MB, PEI, and NL have partial or no coverage.
SIDE EFFECTS: Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, heavy bleeding, maternal death.
LONG-TERM RISKS: Maternal death occurs most frequently due to infection and undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy, or trauma.
2nd Trimester Surgical, D&E.
SHORT EXPLANATION: The baby’s limbs are ripped apart by a clamp after the uterus is drained of amniotic fluid.
COST: Unknown. Covered by universal healthcare in Canada if a permanent resident.
SIDE EFFECTS: Bleeding, cramping, trauma.
LONG TERM RISKS: Incomplete abortion (pieces of the baby left behind) can lead to infection or bleeding, perforated (punctured) uterus, damage to the intestine, bladder and nearby blood vessels, hemorrhage, infection, maternal death, future pregnancy complications due to damage to the cervix, uterine perforation, cervical laceration, infection and hemorrhage, future pregnancies at risk for premature delivery, trauma.
3rd Trimester Induced.
SHORT EXPLANATION: Also called late-term abortion. This is a 3 day procedure where the baby is euthanized via a needle into the uterus.
COST: Unknown in Canada. Covered by universal health care if a permanent resident in Canada. If not, clinics will find you funding.
ADVERSE EFFECTS AND RISKS: A high risk of hemorrhage, lacerations, uterine perforations, and maternal death. Future pregnancies are also at a greater risk for loss or premature delivery due to abortion-related trauma and injury to the cervix.
